Product Review: The TRX

There are not too many pieces of fitness equipment that come close to delivering like the TRX does. Originally designed by Randy Hetrick, a former Navy Seal now CEO of TRX parent company Fitness Anywhere, the TRX was born from random pieces of neglected parachute parts. The idea of having a simple, efficient tool to enhance bodyweight training was developed and executed over the next few years, culminating in the TRX suspension trainer.
Suspension training is not too different from the rings in gymnastics. The only true competitor to the TRX, rings are effective in their own right, but they fall short in competing with the TRX in overall rating. Execution of the TRX is uncomplicated and relevant for all levels of fitness. Difficulty levels can be adjusted from easy to hard in a matter of seconds. The TRX also has applications in every plane of motion. Covering the upper body, lower body, full body and cardiovascular systems, this is a comprehensive conditioning tool. The core is utilized with every movement. When you hold on with your hands and your feet are planted, your core automatically turns on and stabilizes your posture. The same is true when placing the feet in the foot straps and basing with the upper body. In fact, as a “Core Trainer” the TRX is extremely effective.
It is also a sturdy and durable product that hangs from the racks and ceilings of gyms around the world. Setting up the TRX at home is easy if you have a pull-up bar, beam, squat rack, cable tower or tree available. If you don’t, Fitness Anywhere has developed a door mount (MSRP $24.95) and an X-mount ($34.95) that will deliver safe and effective results. A quick note: you will be a little limited if you work from a wall position; the TRX is better if hung in a position where you are able to move 15 to 20 degrees in the opposite direction of the side you are training on.
My only word of caution is regarding the impact of heavy use on the strength of the locks over time – my own personal TRX is being returned due to a faulty lock. Other than that, this is a relatively well-built piece of equipment.
The price of the TRX is $189.95. Though this may seem high, it is worth the benefits of the product. This is a genuine product, from a genuine company. I have spoken directly to Fitness Anywhere’s National Education Director about the philosophy of this product and company – it is one of education and the science of training. And the endorsement of The Next Fitness Evolution is one that is shared with many of the world’s most elite coaches, trainers, athletes and even physical therapists. This product is currently revolutionizing the way trainers and coaches approach their program design. Whether used exclusively or with other forms of conditioning tools, the TRX delivers if used as instructed.
